Poland is situated in the centre of Europe and reaches the area of 312.68 km2. Poland has about 38,6 million citizens. A large amount of the people is catholic, but in the area around Silezie there live also protestants. The Christian holidays like Christmas, Easter, Sacrementsday and Maria Ascension are being celebrated exuberant. The most shops are closed during a holiday, also on Sundays. At Saturday the shops close around 14.00.
The prices in Poland are still lower than in West-Europe. The currancy unit of Poland is the zloty. One zloty is worth 100 grosze. In January 1997 four zeros have been removed from the zloty, so 10.000 zlote became 1 Polish New Zlote (PLN). The old banknotes were taken out of circulation. 1 PLN is about 0.25 euro worth. Creditcards are accepted at many places in Poland. Cashdispensers can be found almost everywhere.
The Polish language belongs to the West-Slavian sort of the family of the Baltoslavian languages. They are family of the Indogerman languages. Climate
The Polish climate forms a intermediate climate between a seaclimate in the north and west to a dry continental climate in the south and east. As in Holland the wind is mostly westerly. The wheather in the mountains can change fast. Poland mostly has warm summers. There is more chance at rain in de the mountains. The warmest parts of the country are located n the lowlands near Silezie. Autumn begins in September. Poland also knows a Golden Autumn, an Autumn with a lot of sunny days. Poland has severe winters. In the mountains during wintertime the temprature can drop below zero for about 130 days.
Poland is well known for its diversity in flora and fauna. Swamplands can be found and even remainings of the Ice age. In the east of Poland there are remainings left of a giant primeval forest that covered a large part of Europe. Agriculture is very important in Poland. In the forests of Poland you will mostly find coniferous forests. At the higher parts of Poland you can find spruces and pine trees. In some of the areas in Poland live rare animals like the lynx, wild cat, beaver and the wolf. Poland is also loved by many birds, there are many eagles and storks to find.
